Donny McCaslin
Bimhaus, Amsterdam ~ 23 April 2026
The Bimhuis in Amsterdam was beaming with heavenly chords struck by saxophone virtuoso Donny McCaslin and his band of equally brilliant companions. With the harbour and Central Station under a starry night, Donny treated the audience on a selection of tracks from his marvelous album "Lullaby for the Lost". We saw and heard it before in Paradox in Tilburg, then with Tim Lefebvre on bass. That night we saw the debut of Robin Mullarkey on bass, but you would never be able to tell. He fit right in. The Bowie fans in the jazzy parlour were treated on a gritty rendition of "Lazarus", fuelled by Jason Lindner's soundscapes. A special mention for drummer Zach Danziger who plays a mean solo, when he is not being chaos incarnate. But in the end, it is the frontman Donny that has stolen our hearts. We felt his vibe, energised as he was by hearing jazz students of the Amsterdam Conservatory in the afternoon. He even revealed he is considering moving to the Dutch capital, the next best thing after New York of course. Wherever he lands, we travel on the jazz notes hitting high, here, there, everywhere.
